If you are a licensed psychologist with a specialty in sports psychology or are a
sport performance expert with a related graduate degree and experience, you may
e-mail us for information on how to obtain a listing in this directory.
Simply click on the "E-Mail Us" icon in
the upper left area of this page and tell us if you would like us to email the
form as an attachment or fax the form to you.
In response to e-mails (Data Bank appears after explanation):
What is a sports psychologist?
We are constantly asked the difference between a sports psychologist and a
mental game or sport psychology expert or educator. The terms "psychologist" and "sport(s)
psychologist" are licensed and regulated by each State in the USA, much the same
as the terms "attorney" and "physician," etc. In order to
find out if someone you are considering is a "sports
psychologist" you will need to contact the Board of Psychological Examiners
in that person's State of practice (usually in the State capital), much like you
would call to find out if someone is a board certified physician.
Mental game or sport psychology experts, by contrast, are not usually licensed
psychologists/sports psychologists, but often have training in athletic related
sport performance and/or coaching, usually through the Exercise Science or
Physical Education Departments of their
universities.
To further confuse matters, many Exercise Science programs offer "Sport Psychology"
courses through Exercise Science. Then you also have Psychology Departments
offering psychology based studies in Sports Psychology. Most mental
game et al experts go the Ph.D. in Exercise Science route. Most sports
psychologists go the Ph.D. in Psychology route. Both should have
supervised experience working with athletes plus sports psychology course
training. The "sports psychologist" will also have to pass national and state
licensing board exams and licensing requirements as determined by the State of
practice.
Further questions or the specific search for a sports psychologist not listed here may
be directed to the Psychological Association in your State, i.e. the Georgia
Psychological Association, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, etc.
We hope this explanation will help educate our visitors about sports
performance experts and sports psychologists as we receive daily mail on these
questions. If you are still confused, please contact your State Psychology
Board for the credentials required to work as a "sports psychologist"
in your State. This explanation is our best attempt to simplify this
confusing issue and should not be considered a legal explanation of any
profession.

Data Bank:
The best way to find general consultation
about your sports performance is to look for someone with a related graduate
degree and experience working with your level and/or your desired level of
performance in your sport of interest. So, that is how the following directory
shows listings.
If you are specifically seeking a sports psychologist and the expert does
not list "licensed psychologist," then you will need to call the
Psychology Board in your State to find out if the person is a sports
psychologist.
